Downtown Palmer Campus Eastside Celebration

Palmer Campus will take a look at the transformation of Charleston’s Eastside as part of its 2019 Spirit Week. A highlight of the week’s activities will be an art gallery opening Wednesday, Oct. 30. On display will be a series of photos by TTC photography students that show the physical transformation that has occurred in the Eastside neighborhood over the decades. The gallery opening will take place from 6-7 p.m. and is open to the public.

Transformation of the Eastside will also be the topic of Eastside Day on Friday, Nov. 1. At noon the campus will hold a panel discussion with representatives from the Eastside community, along with presentations by former TTC instructor Susan Millar Williams, co-author of “Upheaval in Charleston: Earthquake” and “Murder on the Eve of Jim Crow,” and Michele Moore, author of “The Cigar Factory: A Novel of Charleston.” Williams will present an overview of how the area has evolved since the 18^th century when it was developed as an affluent suburb known as Hampstead. Moore will speak about the history of the Cigar Factory, including information about the historic 1945 strike that gave rise to the civil rights anthem, “We Shall Overcome.”

Spirit Week is held annually to celebrate TTC students and the heritage of the Eastside community. In collaboration with TTC’s Film, Media and Visual Arts department, the Palmer Campus Spotlight Committee and the Early College High School, Palmer Campus has planned a week of student-driven activities that the community and TTC employees and students are invited to attend.
