Clemente Graduation coming up Thursday, April 28th

Dr. Mary Ann Kohli invites you to come see our Clemente students launch into the next stage of their educations and lives, as they transition into perhaps a Trident Technical College program, a new job, or a new view of life. Clemente graduation is Thursday, April 28th at 6 pm in the Palmer Amphitheater. Dan Bellack and Matthew Parker will provide the music for the event, and the guest speaker will be Debbie Barton, a CPA who recently moved here from the Atlanta area. A reception will follow the graduation.

What is the Clemente course? Students receive free tuition, meals, books, bus passes, mentoring and refurbished computers. In HSS 101, students embark on a study of art and American history. Students passing this course can then take HSS 102, which combines the study of literature, philosophy and writing. In this class, students are exposed to the Western paradigm through the works of Sophocles, Plato, Shakespeare, Kant and Mill and to the Eastern paradigm through excerpts pertaining to Buddhism, Taoism and Hinduism. In addition to the classroom, Clemente students participate in other activities, including a play.

However, two of our Palmer folks, Connie Bryant and Tiffany Buggs, also placed in the top four. Tiffany Buggs, who is the guru of the Academic Hub, said that what she was trying to show with her door was, “Steaming around the world for new ideas and education.” She further said that she enjoys entering the door contest because “It’s fun, brings out my creativity, and gives me a therapy break from my busy work schedule.”  She encourages others to get involved next year. World Literature Class Offered at Palmer this Summer

by Dr. Richard Hartnett

What should an educated person have read in school? What have most highly successful people read? Ever felt like there’s something you’re missing?

Taking World Literature is a way of solving that problem. College is perhaps the only time in your life that you may read those things that every educated person that you meet will assume that you have read. How much may depend on your understanding the boss’ love of Basho? On your laughing at the interviewer’s clever Voltairian quip? On following it with a witty retort of your own? On convincing a crowd to vote for revolution with a quote from Rousseau? On getting the song’s reference to Verlaine and Rimbaud? On impressing the right person with your take on Hedda Gabler? Or on quoting Octavio Paz to make someone fall in love with you just a little be more passionately? If you don’t know most of these references, you should, and you can. Learn what you should know to be an educated person in English 209, World Literature from the 17th Century to the Present. All the successful kids are doing it.

The course is offered in the 10-week summer schedule on Mondays and Wednesdays, 10:30-12:50, here on the Palmer Campus.
